When to replace your Mattress

When to replace your Mattress

If your mattress is older than seven years, then it is probably time to get a new mattress. This seems at odds with the warrantees offered by manufactures, some as long as 15 years.  So why should you not keep a mattress for that long?  Here are some facts which will help you understand the intimate relationship you have with your mattress.

After 7 years:
  • The materials used in your mattress have compressed over time and now offer little or no comfort and support for your body.
  • Your bed has absorbed about bath full of body moisture – that’s around 300 litres.
  • You have shed 450g of skin cells every year – that’s the equivalent weight of six blocks of margarine over the seven years.
  • Your body has changed and might need better support and comfort than what your mattress can give you.
Other signs that you need to replace your mattress are:
  • You wake up tired even after a 7- or 8-hours sleep
  • You can feel the springs or ridges in the mattress or the firm board placed on top of the spring system.
  • You are waking up unrefreshed and with pain that decreases through the day.
  • There are noticeable dips and sagging where you lie on the mattress
  • You sleep better in beds when you go on holiday or in a hotel
  • Your bed still uses old technology

If you recognise a number of the points above as relevant to you, it’s probably time to change your mattress.  The most important advice we can offer is not to buy cheap.  Despite companies advertising beds for under R20 000, these beds are primarily not suitable as a main bedroom bed for two adults sleeping on it nightly.  Not only will you replace the bed earlier than expected, you may do your body and sleep irreparable harm.
